Digital solutions have the potential to radically improve how societies function, deliver services, and support those in need. At the same time, systems that put profit and efficiency over people, privacy, and security can exacerbate inequalities, marginalise vulnerable populations, and drive digital authoritarianism. The foundation of effective digital transformation lies in the ethical, inclusive, and sustainable use of technology. It is with this philosophy that we have signed the Principles for Digital Development, a set of globally recognised best practices that align with our mission to foster transformative and accountable digital solutions.

The Importance of Principles in Digital Development

Digital development must prioritise human needs. The technology we create and implement should be responsive, scalable, and resilient, with the user's experience at its core. From building interoperable systems that connect public agencies, to empowering citizens with secure access to essential services, the Principles for Digital Development guide us in ensuring that our projects deliver real-world impact without compromising on integrity, inclusivity or sustainability.  For over a decade, Siren has consistently demonstrated its commitment to these ideals by crafting digital solutions that enhance governance, promote transparency, and improve service delivery.

Siren’s Track Record in Ethical Digital Transformation

Our portfolio includes several projects where these principles are already in practice. One example is IMPACT, Lebanon’s first e-governance platform. Through IMPACT, we connected over 1,000 municipalities and 20 ministries, streamlining administrative processes and empowering Lebanon’s Central Inspection to audit public entities effectively. This platform became a crucial tool during the COVID-19 pandemic, enabling effective coordination and communication between stakeholders, and the fair and transparent management of the country’s vaccination campaign. Similarly, our work on the DAEM platform, which digitised Lebanon’s social assistance delivery system, ensured that $177 million in cash aid reached the most vulnerable households during the country’s economic crisis. By designing these systems with data protection, transparency, and accessibility at their core, we were able to create a system that not only met immediate needs but that is also poised for future integration with other development programs.

Why We Signed the Principles

The Principles for Digital Development underscore a crucial point: technology should be a tool for empowerment, not exclusion. By adhering to these principles, we ensure that our digital solutions are open, sustainable, and scalable. Whether through our use of open-source software in Jordan’s energy sector digitisation efforts, or leveraging AI to streamline high-volume public services in Lebanon, we have consistently applied these principles to real-world challenges.

At Siren, signing the Principles reflects our ongoing dedication to creating solutions that are not only technologically sound but also ethically grounded. We are committed to ensuring that the digital systems we design and implement respect privacy, promote inclusion, and deliver long-term value. As we look to the future, Siren will continue to integrate these principles into every facet of our work, driving digital transformation that truly makes a difference.
